Copy a YouTube transcript into Google Docs

Copying a YouTube transcript to Google Docs gives you an editable document for comments, highlights, and collaborative review. youtube transcriber places the official caption track beside a desktop YouTube watch page, so you can copy the text without selecting every line in YouTube's native transcript view.

Copy a YouTube transcript to Google Docs

  1. Open a captioned video at a desktop youtube.com/watch?v=… address in Chrome.
  2. Wait for the extension panel to display the transcript. If optional Automatic loading is disabled, request the transcript from the panel or extension toolbar.
  3. Choose Copy for clean text, or Copy + time if collaborators need a timestamp before each caption line.
  4. Open a new or existing Google Doc and paste the clipboard contents.
  5. Give the document a useful name, then add headings, comments, or highlights without changing the source transcript stored on YouTube.

Choose the right copy format

Plain Copy works well when you want a reading document, a source for a summary, or text that will be reorganized into sections. Copy + time is better for reviews and group work because each line points back to a moment in the video. The pasted header includes the video title and canonical watch link, helping readers retain the source.

Turn the pasted transcript into a useful document

  • Apply Google Docs heading styles to major topics instead of leaving one long block.
  • Use comments for questions and decisions so they remain separate from the caption text.
  • Highlight quotations only after checking important wording against playback.
  • Keep timestamps beside passages that another person may need to verify.
  • Preserve the source link when sharing excerpts in another document.

Check captions before sharing

The extension copies the caption track available from YouTube; it does not upload the video or create a new AI transcript. Automatic captions may contain mistakes, especially in names, numbers, and specialist terms. Click any line in the panel to seek to that moment and compare it with the audio. If a creator has updated the captions, select Refresh before copying again.

When no transcript appears

Confirm that you are on a standard desktop watch page and that the video has an available caption track. Videos without captions cannot be converted from audio by the extension. Restricted pages and embedded players may also prevent normal loading or clipboard access.
