YouTube captions and transcripts usually contain the same spoken words, but they present them for different jobs. Captions are timed text designed to follow playback. A transcript presents that text as a document you can scan, search, and copy.
What are YouTube captions?
Captions appear in short cues synchronized with the video. They may be supplied by the creator or generated automatically by YouTube. Their timing helps viewers follow speech as it happens, and it supports accessibility, language learning, and watching in sound-sensitive environments.
Because captions are split around playback timing, the cue boundaries do not always match sentences or paragraphs. Automatic captions can also contain recognition errors.
What is a YouTube transcript?
A transcript is a text-oriented view of those caption cues. YouTube's native transcript drawer lets you read timed lines beside a video. youtube transcriber also uses the available official caption track, but presents it in an in-page Chrome panel with plain-text and timestamped copy options.
The extension does not create a separate AI transcription. If the source caption says the wrong word, the transcript will usually contain the same error.

Choose timestamped lines when another reader needs to verify a passage against the video. If you need a subtitle file for publishing, a copied transcript is not a replacement for a structured caption format such as SRT or WebVTT.
Availability and accuracy
Both views depend on the source captions.
