How to copy a YouTube transcript on desktop
YouTube exposes caption tracks on many watch pages. youtube transcriber reads the available track in your browser and displays it in a panel you can copy without selecting the native transcript drawer line by line.
Before you start
- Use a standard watch URL containing
/watch?v=…, not a Short. - Confirm that the video has automatic or creator-provided captions.
- Use youtube.com in Chrome with the extension enabled.
Copy the transcript
- Open the video and wait for the in-page panel to load. If automatic loading is off, load the transcript from the panel or toolbar.
- Review the transcript lines. Select a line to confirm that seeking moves the player to the expected timestamp.
- Select Copy for plain text or Copy + time when your notes need timestamps.
- Paste the result into your editor. The clipboard header includes the video title and canonical watch link.
If copying fails
Chrome may block clipboard access on restricted pages. Retry from the top-level YouTube watch tab rather than an embedded player on another website. The panel shows an error if the Clipboard API rejects the write.
Refresh captions after changes
Creators can replace captions after publishing a video. Select Refresh in the panel to clear the temporary cache and request the current caption track for that video.
