A timestamped transcript connects every note to the moment it came from. With youtube transcriber, use Copy + time to copy the available YouTube caption track with a timestamp before each line, then paste it into meeting notes, research documents, or review comments.
Copy a transcript with timestamps
- Open a captioned video on a desktop
youtube.com/watch?v=…page. - Wait for the in-page transcript panel to load. If Automatic loading is off, request the transcript from the panel or extension icon.
- Scan the transcript and select a line to seek the player to that exact section.
- Select Copy + time. Each copied line receives a timestamp such as
[1:24]. - Paste the result into your notes. The copied header also includes the video title and canonical watch link for source context.
When timestamps are worth keeping
- Meeting preparation: mark statements that the group should watch or discuss together.
- Interview research: keep quotations tied to their original delivery and surrounding context.
- Video review: give an editor or teammate precise moments to revisit.
- Study notes: create a quick route back to an explanation, example, or definition.
- Fact checking: verify names, numbers, and claims against the audio before publishing them elsewhere.
Organize timestamped notes clearly
Keep the title and source link at the top of the document. Under that, group related transcript lines beneath short topic headings. Add your own comments on separate lines so copied words are not confused with interpretation. If you quote a short passage, retain its nearest timestamp even after removing unrelated transcript lines.
The timestamps identify positions in the current video. They are helpful references, but they are not automatically converted into clickable links in every note application. Use the extension panel's line seeking while reviewing, or combine the watch URL with a time parameter when you deliberately create shareable links.
Choose plain text when timing adds clutter
For a clean reading copy, a draft summary, or text you plan to reformat heavily, select Copy instead. It removes the repeated time labels while retaining the video title and link in the header.
Accuracy and updates
The extension copies YouTube's available captions and does not correct their wording. Verify important automatic-caption passages against playback. If a creator has recently revised captions, select Refresh to clear the temporary cache and load the current track. If no caption track exists, the extension cannot generate timestamps or transcript text from the audio.
