How to transcribe a YouTube video

To transcribe a YouTube video with youtube transcriber, open a captioned video on a desktop YouTube watch page and use the extension's in-page transcript panel. The extension turns the video's available caption track into readable, copyable lines without uploading the audio to a transcription service.

What you need

• Google Chrome with youtube transcriber enabled.
• A standard URL containing youtube.com/watch?v=….
• A video with creator-provided or automatic YouTube captions.

Transcribe a YouTube video step by step

1. Open the video. Use its desktop watch page rather than a Short, embedded player, or mobile page.
2. Wait for the transcript panel. With Automatic loading enabled, the extension reads the available caption track after the watch page loads. If automatic loading is off, request the transcript from the panel or extension icon.
3. Review the text. Scan a few lines before copying. Select any transcript line to seek the player to that moment and check the wording against the audio.
4. Choose a copy format. Select Copy for clean text, or Copy + time to prefix each line with its video timestamp.
5. Paste the transcript. Move it into notes, a document, or another text editor. The copied header identifies the video with its title and canonical watch link.

Which copy option should you use?

Plain Copy is easier to read when you are preparing a summary, extracting quotations, or creating study notes. Copy + time is better when readers need to return to specific moments, such as during research, review, or meeting preparation.

Check the transcript before relying on it

The text reflects YouTube's source captions. Creator-uploaded captions may be carefully edited, while automatic captions can mishear names, technical terms, accents, or overlapping speech. youtube transcriber does not replace or correct that source. Use line seeking to verify important passages against the video.

If no transcript appears

Check whether the YouTube player offers Subtitles/CC. If the video has no available caption track, the extension cannot invent one from the audio. For a video that should have captions, select Refresh to clear the temporary cache and request the current track again. Reloading the watch tab can also help after several in-page video changes.
