Transcribe a YouTube video to text

A YouTube video is easier to search, quote, and organize when its spoken content is available as text. youtube transcriber converts the caption track already available on a desktop watch page into copyable text that you can paste into a document, note app, or research workspace.

What “video to text” means here

The Chrome extension does not upload the video or send its audio to a separate AI transcription service. It reads the official caption track exposed by YouTube in the open watch page. That makes the process quick for captioned videos, but it also means the extension cannot create text when YouTube provides no captions.

Turn a YouTube video into readable text

1. Open a desktop YouTube URL containing /watch?v=….
2. Check that the player has a Subtitles/CC option. Automatic captions and captions uploaded by the creator can both supply transcript text.
3. Let the youtube transcriber panel load. If you turned off Automatic loading, request the transcript manually from the panel or toolbar icon.
4. Read several lines and select one to seek to the matching moment. This is a quick way to check names, numbers, or specialist terms.
5. Select Copy for text without line timestamps.
6. Paste the result into your destination document and format it for the job at hand.

Make the pasted text easier to use

Caption cues are designed around playback timing, so their line breaks may not follow normal paragraphs. After pasting, join related lines, add headings, and separate speakers where you can identify them reliably. Keep the video title and canonical link from the copied header so you can return to the source.

For quotations or factual notes, compare the text with the audio. Automatic captions can misrecognize proper nouns, punctuation, accents, and overlapping voices. The extension preserves the source track rather than silently rewriting it.

When timestamps are more useful than plain text

Plain text works well for reading, outlining, and drafting summaries. If you are preparing review notes, interview research, or a handoff to another person, use Copy + time instead. Each line keeps a timestamp, making it faster to verify context in the original video.

If the text does not load

Use Refresh when captions were recently changed or the panel appears to contain a cached result. Reload the watch tab after extensive in-page navigation. If the player itself has no captions, choose another captioned video or wait for the creator or YouTube to publish a track.
