Summary

youtube transcriber reads caption data that YouTube already exposes in your browser on watch pages you open, then displays it in an in-page panel. Transcript text is processed in the page context. We do not operate a separate cloud transcription service for your videos.

Data processed on your device

• Caption text and track metadata for the YouTube video you are viewing, fetched through the same class of requests your browser makes on youtube.com.
• Local preferences and session data in Chrome extension storage, including UI language, automatic loading, copy-with-timestamps, panel state, prompt counters, a transcript cache keyed by video ID, and anonymous analytics identifiers when analytics is enabled.
• Clipboard content only when you select Copy or Copy + time. The extension writes that content locally through the Clipboard API.

Cached transcript text is stored on your device for up to 24 hours and can be cleared for the current video with Refresh. The extension does not scan YouTube in the background or build a server-side archive of your transcripts.

Data sent off-device

When enabled in the shipping build, the extension sends limited product telemetry and sanitized error reports to self-hosted services used to maintain product quality:

Umami analytics

An anonymous client identifier, coarse extension events, browser language, screen size, and a fixed extension hostname. Extension analytics do not include transcript text or the URLs of pages you browse.

GlitchTip error reporting

A sanitized error name and message, a random event ID, and coarse action tags such as transcript extraction. Reports do not include transcript text, YouTube video titles, credentials, arbitrary site URLs, or stack frames in the shipped payload.

Feedback forms

Answers you choose to submit through the self-hosted uninstall survey or the optional Google feedback form. Opening or submitting a form is user-initiated.

This website also uses self-hosted Umami to measure anonymous visits and install-link clicks. It does not use advertising trackers.

We do not sell personal data. We do not collect credentials, arbitrary site content, a browsed list of your YouTube watch history, or full transcript archives on our servers.

Chrome permissions

• storage saves extension settings, local counters, and the temporary transcript cache on your device.
• scripting injects the bundled in-page panel when needed. The extension does not download or execute remote JavaScript.
• tabs routes toolbar actions to the tab you selected, opens the welcome page, and opens links you choose. It does not log unrelated tabs.
• Host access lets the extension read captions on YouTube watch pages and reach the analytics and error-reporting hosts described above. Content scripts run only on youtube.com.

Retention

Local settings remain until you clear extension data or uninstall. The temporary transcript cache expires after 24 hours. Analytics, error, and voluntarily submitted feedback data are retained according to the configuration of their respective services and are used for product reliability and improvement, not advertising profiles.

Children

The extension and website are general productivity tools and are not directed at children under 13.

We will update this page when our data practices change. Material changes will be reflected here before or alongside a Chrome Web Store update.
