YouTube transcript not available

A missing transcript usually means YouTube did not make a usable caption track available to the watch page. youtube transcriber reads available captions; it does not generate new captions from the video's audio.

Common reasons a transcript is missing

  • The video has no captions. The creator may not have uploaded captions, and automatic captions may not have been generated.
  • The video is live. An active stream may not expose a reusable caption track. Replay captions can also take time to appear after the stream ends.
  • The upload is mostly music. Automatic caption availability varies, especially when there is little continuous speech.
  • The video is restricted. Age, region, rights, account, or playback restrictions can prevent the page from exposing caption data normally.
  • You are not on a standard watch page. Shorts, embeds, and mobile layouts do not provide the same desktop right-column experience.
  • The page has stale data. YouTube uses in-page navigation, so the visible video can change before every page component has updated.

What to try

  1. Open the video directly on youtube.com using a URL containing /watch?v=….
  2. Check the YouTube player settings for a Subtitles/CC option. If no caption track appears there, the extension normally has nothing to read.
  3. Wait for the watch page to finish loading, then select Refresh in the transcript panel. Refresh clears the temporary cache for that video and requests the available track again.
  4. Reload the browser tab if you arrived through several videos using in-page navigation.
  5. Confirm that the extension is enabled and allowed to run on youtube.com.
  6. Try another captioned video. If that transcript loads, the original video's caption availability is the likely cause.

If captions work in the player but not the panel

The caption track may be available in a form the page or extension could not read during that load. Refresh the panel first, then reload the top-level watch tab. If the problem affects multiple captioned videos, follow the full panel troubleshooting checklist.

Cases that waiting may fix

New uploads and recently ended live streams can gain automatic or replay captions later. The extension cannot predict when YouTube will publish a track. Return to the watch page later and use Refresh to clear the saved result for that video.

Cases the extension cannot fix

If YouTube provides no caption track because of the video's settings, content, or restrictions, youtube transcriber cannot reconstruct one from the audio. The creator or YouTube must make captions available first.
