How to get a YouTube transcript

You can get a YouTube transcript from the native transcript drawer when YouTube makes that option available, or use youtube transcriber for a persistent in-page panel with direct copy controls. Both approaches depend on captions supplied by the creator or generated by YouTube.

First, check whether a transcript exists

Open the video on a standard desktop watch page and look for Subtitles/CC in the player settings. A caption track is the source for the transcript. If there are no captions, neither YouTube's drawer nor the extension can display text for that video.

Find the native YouTube transcript

1. Open the video's youtube.com/watch?v=… page.
2. Expand the description or open the video's additional actions.
3. Look for Show transcript. The exact placement can change as YouTube updates its interface.
4. Open the transcript drawer and select a line to jump to that part of the video.

The native drawer is useful for reading and navigating. However, its availability and controls can vary by video and page layout, and copying a complete transcript may require selecting text manually.

Get the transcript with the Chrome extension

1. Install and enable youtube transcriber, then open a captioned desktop watch page.
2. Wait for the right-column transcript panel. If Automatic loading is disabled, load the transcript from the panel or toolbar icon.
3. Use Copy to get plain transcript text or Copy + time to retain a timestamp beside every line.
4. Paste the result into your notes or document. Select a line in the panel whenever you need to seek and verify a passage.

Native drawer or extension?

• Use the native drawer when you only need to read along or locate one moment and do not want an extension.
• Use youtube transcriber when you regularly copy complete text, need timestamped lines, or want the transcript visible above related videos.

When the transcript is missing or outdated

A new upload or recently ended live stream may not have captions yet. Restricted videos can also expose tracks differently. If captions are visible in the player but the panel has stale or empty text, select Refresh. This clears the extension's temporary result for that video and requests the available track again. The extension reads official YouTube caption data in the page; it does not upload audio or create a new AI transcript.
